New Store to Feature and Support Work of West Province Friars  ANCHORAGE, ALASKA, October 27, 2009 – In early 2010 when St. Paul’s Corner officially opens its doors for business, it will be the only Catholic retail store linked to a Dominican-run parish in the Western Dominican Province. Friars from the Western Dominican Province have served at Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage, Alaska since 1974.“The Dominicans have been faithful to evangelize and share their gifts with us to meet the needs of the community here. For some time, there has been a real need in Anchorage and the Archdiocese for someone to provide the Catholic community with a wide selection of quality Catholic books, gifts and items of faith,” said St. Paul’s Corner director Bernardette Frost. “St. Paul’s Corner is a response to that expressed need. That it can be linked to a Dominican parish is a real blessing for everyone. We are truly grateful to the Western Dominican Province and, in particular our pastor, Fr. Francis Le, for his enthusiastic and untiring support of this endeavor.” The Holy Family Center, formerly used primarily as the parish’s education center, is undergoing extensive renovation. In addition to expanded space for lectures, classes, and the library, Holy Family Center will house St. Paul’s Corner, which will provide the Anchorage area and the archdiocese with Catholic books and gifts. As the only store in the Archdiocese of Anchorage specializing exclusively in Catholic items, it is positioned to become the primary source of items of faith for Catholics and others in Anchorage and beyond. “It makes sense to support and collaborate with the work of the Dominicans as part of this endeavor,” remarked assistant director Tara Clemens. “We envision St. Paul’s Corner as a place where people will want to come and learn more about and share the Catholic faith with others, everyone from our volunteers to locals and the tourists who fill our city each summer. This is another avenue for preaching the Gospel.” St. Paul’s Corner has already hosted one event: a book signing and reception for Fr. Paul Scanlon, OP, who was at Holy Family Cathedral celebrating his golden jubilee. Fr. Paul preached the 9:30 a.m. Mass and 2:00 p.m. Spanish Mass and then signed copies of his book, “Finding the Elusive God”, while conversing with parishioners. Fr. Paul’s book remains a featured item through the month of October in St. Paul’s Corner Pre-Opening Sales events. “This is truly an exciting time,” stated assistant director Fran Lopinsky. “The response from the community to St. Paul’s Corner is already amazing and we’re not even in our permanent location yet.” |
